My understanding is that when you do a search on LinkedIn, the results are personalised. All the top 10 that I see for Social Media Consultant are in my network, or we have shared connections, or they're 3rd degree contacts (which makes perfect sense of course, but does describe how people saw themselves in the top positions so quickly).
